Keith with Son Kieran
Hair stylist and designer Keith O’Brien is a man who loves his work. Though he attended an art college and studied illustration and design in California, he smiles and admits that “Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a hairdresser.”
After working at travel agencies and seeing the world, Keith decided to pursue his original dream. He went to beauty school and apprenticed at 77 Maiden Lane Salon, a renowned San Francisco salon. In 1992, he opened his own Sonoma County hair salon in Petaluma.
As it turned out, Keith’s art training served him well as a hairdresser. “I have a background in color, art, and design,” he said. When I look at something, or somebody, I edit in my mind and ask, how can I make this better?
With a self-described “practical, realistic approach,” Keith doesn’t just cut hair; he creates hairstyles to fit his clients’ lives. “I learn about their lifestyles, their day-to-day activities, their occupation, and the time they have to devote to doing their hair,” he said. If they’re not sure, I help guide them.”
With over twenty years’ experience, Keith is able to create custom styles that are not only beautiful and functional, but that reflect his clients’ personal lifestyle. Each new client receives a one-on-one consultation during which he listens carefully and custom designs a hair style and regimen to fit them individually.
“I listen to my clients,” said Keith. “They’re like family to me. If you communicate and understand expectations you’ll have a happy client. Sometimes they don’t know what they want.” He laughed and said, “I’ve had clients that thanked me for not cutting all their hair off even though that’s what they asked for when they walked in. It’s about getting clear about what they’re hoping for and understanding their lifestyle. Someone who has six kids and a full time job, she’s happy to get her hair washed, and a simple cut that’s easy to maintain. It’s important that she get a cut that looks great and requires minimal work.”
Keith is a down-to-earth, unpretentious and friendly man who takes the time needed to help his clients find the perfect cut for them, no matter what they’re looking for. Many of his clients have been with him for twenty or more years. “I’ve gone through their weddings, births, divorces and life changes with them,” he said laughing. “And they’ve gone through mine. They know I’ll provide quality and consistency. They can count on me.”
When you book an appointment at Keith O’Brien’s Hair design in Sonoma County, you can be assured that you will get a great haircut and perfect hair color for your lifestyle, and perhaps gain a friend and confidant at the same time. Come in with a sense of adventure, and you’ll leave with a smile.
